John Clark, a middle-aged estate lawyer from Chicago, is deeply devoted to his family, especially his wife Beverly. However, their hectic schedules and the monotony of their 20-year marriage have left him feeling unfulfilled. Every evening on his way home via the el train, he notices a young, beautiful woman gazing wistfully out of a window at Miss Mitzi's Dance Studio, which specializes in ballroom dancing. Intrigued by her beauty and air of melancholy, he decides to visit the studio one evening.
There, he learns that the woman's name is Paulina, a former world-class ballroom dancer who now works as an instructor at the studio. Fascinated by her, John signs up for beginner group dance lessons, despite the fact that they are taught by Miss Mitzi herself rather than Paulina. As time goes by, John becomes increasingly entangled in the lives of those at the dance studio, including his two classmates - the overweight Vern, who aims to learn to dance for his upcoming wedding, and Chic, who hopes to impress the ladies. He also becomes involved with two of the studio's competitive amateurs: the opinionated and brash Bobbie, who is in search of a dance partner, and another individual who surprises John by expressing a desire to reveal their true self to the world while hiding behind a mask. Meanwhile, Paulina, despite vowing not to fraternize with the students, gradually becomes more engaged in their lives.
Ultimately, John comes to a realization about what he has been seeking since he first spotted Paulina in the window. Similarly, each person at the dance studio is searching for their own niche in life with the right person, including Paulina. However, John's hopes for a happy ending are dashed when Beverly, due to certain circumstances, comes to believe that he is having an affair.
